Major Fire Engulfs 11 Fishing Boats in Udupi, Causes Estimated Loss of Over 9 Crores
MANGALURU: About 11 fishing boats were gutted in a major fire mishap in Gangolli of Udupi district on Monday. The fire department received an alert around 10:30 am, prompting an immediate response from the Kundapur fire station. Firefighters, along with vehicles from Udupi and Byndoor Fire Stations, battled the flames for about three hours, successfully bringing the fire under control by 1:30 pm. Approximately 30 officials and personnel were involved in the operation.
Officials reported that the fire damaged 11 boats, including 8 purse seine boats, 2 traditional (small) boats, and a dinghy that were docked. Additionally, 2 fishing nets and 2 bikes were damaged due to the fire. Fortunately, nobody was hurt in the incident.
A rough estimate puts the loss at over 9 crores, with a more accurate assessment anticipated by Tuesday. While the exact cause remains unclear, there are suspicions that the fire may have ignited from dry coconut leaves placed above the boats, potentially triggered by crackers.
Police officials have registered a case. Fisheries Minister Mankal Vaidya visited the spot and collected details from the fishermen and the officials.
