Cops yet to get forensic report on Dr P A Baiju

Sources at the regional police office said only after receiving it they could proceed with the case in the court.

KOTTAYAM: The police is yet to receive the chemical analysis report on the death of Dr P.A. Baiju, the Ayurveda doctor who died after consuming the medicine he had prescribed to the patient. This will further delay the filing of the amended charge-sheet in the case. The Munnar police had sent his viscera to the Forensic Sciences Laboratory (FSL) at Thiruvananthapuram on September 17. Sources at the regional police office said only after receiving it they could proceed with the case in the court.

Dr Baiju who was lying in a coma for more than nine years died on September 12 while the trial in the case of poisoning him was at its final stage. He was the medical officer at the Government Ayurvedic Dispensary at Bisonvalley, Idukki when he prescribed a medicine for a patient, Shanthi, who fainted after consuming it. Determined to prove its efficiency he also drank the concoction and fainted on January 25, 2007, and later fell into a coma.

It was later revealed that Shanthi’s husband Rajappan had mixed the medicine with pesticides to kill her. The police has to reframe charges based on the autopsy, which was conducted at the Muvattupuzha General Hospital, and the chemical analysis reports to substantiate them. Rajappan is now facing charges of culpable homicide instead of attempt to murder registered previously.
