Denied land passbook for 20 years, Telangana farmer attempts suicide

The farmer had filed a case, which was disposed of some months back

Hyderabad: Having failed to get a passbook for his agricultural land that he purchased two decades back, a 50-year-old farmer and his son attempted suicide in the chambers of Yadadri-Bhongir district collector by pouring petrol and trying to set themselves ablaze.

The collectorate staff in a swift reaction rescued them. However, the collector was not in office at that time.

Later, additional collector D Srinivas Reddy said that the farmer B Uppalaiah and his son Mahesh came to the chamber carrying petrol in a bottle. On noticing their movements, the staff rushed inside.

As it was a grievance day on Monday, Uppalaiah and Mahesh came around 10 am to meet revenue officials. Even as officials began listening to grievances of people, the two went to the chamber.

Uppalaiah told the officials that he had purchased two acres of agricultural land in 2006 from persons known to him at Kolanupaka of Alair. He lamented that officials had failed to issue him a passbook despite several pleas.

Srinivas Reddy told Deccan Chronicle that the farmer had filed a case, which was disposed of some months back.

"A passbook was issued for one acre and there are no revenue records in connection with the other acre, which is in his possession," he said. The revenue official directed the farmer to file a civil case in connection with the issue.

Later, Reddy instructed the RDO, mandal tahsildar and surveyor to visit the land belonging to Uppalaiah and conduct a survey. He assured to take up registration of the land based on the survey reports.
