Bear rescued from residential colony in Suryapet

HYDERABAD: Residents of Srinivasnagar Colony in Suryapet had a surprise visitor on Sunday morning — a bear that entered the locality and hid at the site of an under-construction building. It was later rescued by the forest officials and released in the wild.

The bear was first spotted by a resident A. Srinivas, who noticed the animal trying to enter his residence around 9.30 am. As he raised the alarm, the bear fled towards the under-construction building.

As the news spread, locals started squatting near the under-construction building, while many, gripped by fear, shut themselves indoors.

A team of police, municipality workers and forest department officials dispersed the crowd, but had a tough time in rescuing the bear.

Forest officials said that the bear, used to move in Timmapur and Aravapally hillock areas, where it was spotted earlier.

Suryapet town police inspector G. Rajasekhar said that they received a call on Dial-100 helpline and rushed to the spot. After a bear was spotted at Srinivas Colony, near DMart, the police informed the forest department officials and municipality staff for taking rescue measures, he said.

“The forest department sent two teams along with required equipment from Warangal and Hyderabad. The rescue operation lasted for a couple of hours. There was no damage and the teams safely rescued the bear from the under-construction building around 4.30 pm,” Rajasekhar sai
