Hyderabad to have first Vinayak nimajjanam tank for immersing Ganesh idols
Hyderabad: Similar to Bengaluru’s Ulsoor lake, Hyderabad will have its first Vinayak nimajjanam tank for immersing Ganesh idols at Cherlapally.
Following a High Court directive to prevent water bodies from getting polluted, the GHMC has sanctioned Rs 67 lakh to turn a portion of the Koneru lake at Cherlapally into an immersion site.
Speaking to this newspaper, Hyderabad mayor Bonthu Rammohan, after laying the foundation stone for the tank, said the immersion tank had been proposed at a convenient place so that it could be accessible from the road and for the inlets and outlets of the lake.
“The tank, which is part of the Cherlapally water body, will be operational this year. The irrigation department will be calling for tenders and the deadline will be August-end. Immersion will be carried out in September,” Mr Rammohan said.
The mayor added, “Around Rs 4.9 crore has also been allotted for beautification of the entire Cherlapally lake by the GHMC and the Irrigation department. Also, baby tank projects will be taken up in 10 different lakes in the twin cities next year based on the success of the project.
“Around 50 lakes will be taken up in different places in the GHMC, which will coordinate with the HMDA and irrigation department for beautification of the lakes by providing walkways, cycling tracks, children’s play parks and lighting arrangements. A sewerage treatment plant will be established at Cherlapally lake for treatment and recycling water, which will be diverted into the lake.”
The Cherlapally tank, which is a minor irrigation tank, falls in the Musi sub-basin. It spreads over 58.43 acre. In the tank's periphery, a portion will be developed as the immersion site.
