Kozhikode soon to be free of poultry waste
KOZHIKODE: Kozhikode Municipal Corporation’s slaughter-poultry waste management plan is gathering steam. It plans, to begin with, a poultry waste rendering unit which will produce chicken oil, protein and fertiliser. The civic body's health standing committee will hold a meeting with chicken stall owners on Friday to discuss its implementation, before seeking expressions of interest (EoI) from firms. One of them interested in the project has already procured an advanced machinery for a poultry rendering plant.
At present, the corporation is outsourcing the disposal of the slaughter waste. Many expect the rendering plant, proposed by collector U. V. Jose, to be a boon for the district at large and slaughterhouses that are finding it difficult to dispose of it according to the prescribed rules. The plant will also bring additional revenue to the civic body. The corporation health officer Dr R.S. Gopakumar said Kozhikode would be the first city in the country to become poultry waste free. “The plant will ensure no part of chicken goes waste but useful byproducts,” he told DC.
