Ganesh Chaturthi preparations ramped up

Hyderabad: Localities across the city have started decorating pandals — enclosures that house idols of deities — for the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, given that the festivities, without fail, hit a fever pitch in the city every year, bettered probably only in Mumbai.

By Thursday, lakhs of idols were already in place, with final touches being given to the enclosures.

Over the past week, it was a common sight to see idols being transported across the city, from major markets at Dhoolpet, Chandanagar, Choutuppal, Nahold and Yemjal. Historically, Dhoolpet has been a hub of artisans who are renowned for creating beautiful idols, while incorporating modern trends.

Mahesh Singh Kalakar, an idol maker, said: “The price depends on the variety and size. A 10-foot idol is sold for '25,000-'30,000. Almost 70 per cent of the idols have been delivered, while final touches are being given to the rest. This year, there was no confusion unlike the last year, with the authorities and pollution control board coordinating.”

Markets around the city also started wearing a busy look, as pandal organisers thronged to buy flowers, decorative material and other items for the festivities.
