Jipmer branch opens at Karaikkal
Puducherry: Lt Governor Kiran Bedi inaugurated the branch of centrally-sponsored premier health institute Jipmer in Karaikkal in the presence of chief minister V. Narayanasamy, his cabinet colleagues, MPs and MLAs. The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) commenced classes in MBBS course in its Karaikal branch with an initial strength of 49 students from November 15 for 2016-17 academic year.
Arasalar complex on Beach road, Karaikal, had been acquired for the new campus. A digital library has been set up with 50 computers and online subscription for international medical books. The detailed project report of the new campus in the first phase has already been prepared and would be presented to the standing finance committee in January 2017, said S.J. Parija, director of Jipmer. In the second phase, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam complex will be completed and this will house the labs of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology and pathology.
These will provide adequate teaching amenities to students in terms of teaching labs and demonstration rooms with which the requirements of the MBBS students for the pre and para-clinical courses will be completed, said Mr Parija. The second phase envisages a Rs 384 crore multi-specialty hospital with all super-specialties and some specialties to cater to the needs of the people of Karaikal and the surrounding areas.
