Short film to create awareness about third gender
Coimbatore: A short film titled ‘3-G Humanity of third gender’ that throws light on the life of members of those belonging to the third gender community was launched in Coimbatore on Saturday.
The film is the brain child of city-based Saikarthi M B, an artist who acts in non-commercial short films with a social message. The idea to create a short film on the particular subject came to his mind when he came across the public ill-treating members of the third gender, while he was traveling by rail. “After getting off the train I came across another set of members of the transgender community nursing a stray dog. Two second incident made me believe that members of this community are not as perceived by the public. Thus, was born the idea to send the message to the public that transgenders too must be treated with due respect.” he said.
In order to create the short film, 34-year old Saikarthi spend quality time with several transgender groups. “I stayed with them, ate meals with them and observed their routine activities.” he said. It was during one of the interactions, that Saikarthi came across a transgender in the city.
“The mother had two children, a son and the second child transgender. While the former disowned the mother, the latter took responsibility of the aged mother and continues to look after the woman. This incident moved me and made me realize that members of the third gender are good at heart. It is the attitude of the public towards them that must change. This is the message that I want to convey through my short film.”
