NGT directs GHMC to ensure timely completion of dump yards

HYDERABAD: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to complete works on three solid waste dumping yards in Dundigal, Pyaranagar and Yacharam, within the deadline set by the tribunal for each project.

In an order dated April 10, the tribunal observed a delay in works and directed the GHMC to “closely monitor and expedite these processes and adhere to the timeline mentioned”. The three dump yards will be set up to ease the burden on the Jawaharnagar landfill.

While stating that it has allotted at least one year for each project, the NGT directed the GHMC to stick to its own timelines, as submitted to the green court earlier.

The NGT also directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) expert committee to file a report on the GHMC’s measures to safeguard the environment and suggest waste capping for the Jawaharnagar landfill. The green court asked IIT-Bombay to furnish a final report, including mitigation measures to ensure leachate does not drain into water bodies.

In a report on March 8, the GHMC submitted various reasons for delays in each of the three projects.

The GHMC had cited a delay in shifting power cables underground at Dundigal, estimating work on the project to commence by April.

At Pyaranagar, the civic body cited delay in felling or translocation of trees and gave a six-month estimate to lay approach roads and finish construction, once the issue of trees is resolved. The NGT had directed the GHMC to submit the details of the 450 trees that needed to be felled or translocated.

At Yacharam, the GHMC sought an additional year to expand the capacity of a waste-to-energy plant, from 12 MW to 14 MW.
