Youths make nombu thura' hip in Kozhikode

Youngsters trigger new culinary trends in Kozhikode during Ramzan season.

Kozhikode: Ramzan has triggered the mushrooming of many pop-up eateries that cater to the seasonal needs as most of the regular shops owned by Muslims remain closed during the holy month.

The youngsters have come up with out of the box ideas to make the 'Nombu Thura' or the breaking of fast in a stylish manner.

They have kickstarted several stores, including Adaminde Chaya Kadda, situated near the old corporation office, showcasing the traditional values of Muslim family.

Chicken Pottitherichathu (exploded chicken), Olichu Kalikkana Chemmeenkoottam (prawns playing hide and seek), Veerappan Chicken (forest-style chicken fry) are some of the dishes displayed at Adaminde Chaya Kadda, creating curiosity among the locals.

Aneez Adam, the brain behind the venture, said, "since the people of Kozhikode are among those who have tasted and tried all international and local foods, the best way to attract them is to present some unique dishes that with novel names."

"All the names are familiar to the Malayalis but not as food items," he added. Aneez is a London School of Economics graduate and has been working abroad in banking sector for the last 13 years. It is out of his sheer passion for the food industry that he came back to his native place to start a venture.

The other attractive stores include Sandwich Corner at Mavoor road that offers a wide variety of sandwiches, Momos Centre that provides Muslim cuisine-style momos apart from its Chinese flavours and the pop-up stores at Thondayad, including Sulaimani. The homely Ramzan food served by Naseema in her house at Thondayad bypass has also proved a hit.
