Centre pushes AP to set up chemical hub

VIJAYAWADA: Union chemicals and fertilisers secretary Arun Baroka and AP chief secretary in Vijayawada on Friday discussed in detail the establishment of chemical parks in Andhra Pradesh, as it has a long coastline, which could as well transform the state into a chemical hub of India.

Others present at the meeting included AP special chief secretary (Industry) Karikal Valaven, principal secretary (Finance) Shamsher Singh Rawat, and industries commissioner Pravin Kumar.

Arun Baroka underlined that India is the sixth largest producer of chemicals in the world, with a market size of $178 billion. It is expected to reach $300 billion by 2025. The industry currently employs around two million people in India.

In this regard, Dr Jawahar Reddy said the ease of doing business in AP is high and it has a 640 km coastline as well. It is one of India’s four Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemicals Investment Regions. The state is thus highly suited for being a chemical hub in India.

In this context, the AP chief secretary pointed out that Sri City in AP is soon expected to become the AC manufacturing capital of India.

The central and state officials discussed setting up of Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET) in AP at two locations – Nellore and Visakhapatnam. These institutes will provide skills and technical support related to this industry.

The meeting concluded with the central delegation inviting the Government of Andhra Pradesh to the 3rd Edition of India: Global Chemicals and Petrochemicals Manufacturing Hubs Summit scheduled in New Delhi on July 27 and July 28.
