Telangana State fares badly in CBSE Class 10 exams
Over 17 lakh students cleared the CBSE Class 10 exams, according to the results declared on Wednesday.
91.46 percent students passed the exams, an increase of 0.36 percent since last year. Girls yet again outshone boys nationally, as well as in the state. On the national level, while girls recorded a 3.17 percent higher pass percentage, in Telangana, girls recorded a pass percentage of 99.51 percent against 98.97 pass percentage for boys.
Yet again Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram emerged as the best performing district. Telangana failed to make it to the list, despite schools like Glendale Academy, Meridian, Delhi Public School, Johnson Grammar School, Euro School, among others in the city recording a 100 percent result.
Nationally, the Kendriya Vidyalaya schools have given the best performance with almost all of their students securing a pass percentage of 99.23 percent followed by Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas at 98.66 percent. Due to the prevailing situation, the board has decided to not release any merit lists, for both Class 10 and Class 12 results. The CBSE has awarded marks based on an average of the highest three marks obtained in subjects for which exams were held.
Meanwhile, even though the overall pass percentage has increased this year marginally, the number of students placed in the compartment category has also increased. The number of students who have been placed in the compartment category is 1.5 lakh students, 8.02 percent of those who appeared for the 10th exam this year. As per the board’s statement, it has decided to replace the term ‘Fail’ with ‘Essential Repeat’ this year in students’ documents.
The board will decide and announce the schedule for compartment exams after consultation with the central government. The modalities for re-checking and re-valuation will also be notified by the board in due course.
Even as the pass percentage for Class 10 has increased this year across the country, the Telangana state board of intermediate education (TSBIE) is confident they will be able to accommodate admissions in intermediate colleges in the state.
Syed Omar Jaleel, secretary, board of intermediate education, said, “Last year we had sanctioned 8.06 lakh seats and the intake was around 5 lakh. This year 5.35 lakh students have passed out. Not all of them will get into intermediate colleges, some may apply to other places like polytechnic colleges, etc. I think we will face no issues in accommodating students despite the high pass percentage.”
