Vijayawada: Cops go corrupt with political aid
Vijayawada: The increasing criminal cases against police personnel are tarnishing the image of the department in the state.
Recently, the involvement of Vizag DSP Dasari Ravi Babu in two murder cases has astonished even the police bosses. It is said that he has the support of a local minister.
In Krishna district, two SI cadre officers were suspended on charges of sexual harassment. Police officers, in many districts, are facing charges of corruption and misconduct.
A senior IPS official said: "Police officers, though lacking integrity, are able to secure postings in key positions due to political clout and this is in turn is spoiling the image of the entire department. In the CM's constituency, a DSP is facing allegations of involvement in red sanders smuggling and the then SP recommended her dismissal from service as she is 'resorting to corruption' in the probation period itself. "It is politicians who should be blamed for the indiscipline in the department but not the police personnel," he added.
Recently, in Nellore, a DSP and two CIs were sent to Vacancy Reserve, VR, following allegations of involvement in betting case. An SP is also facing similar allegations.
In the East Godavari and Visakhapatnam districts, a few DSPs and CIs are allegedly involved in ganja smuggling. There is criticism that heavy political influence is facilitating police officers, even with low self-esteem, occupy key positions in the department.
While a few political leaders are recommending candidates of their choice in key positions to help them in their businesses, others are trying to settle things with the Opposition leaders. Sincere officers are being relegated to VR while others facing charges are posted in key positions.
