AP Police Warns Against Spreading Fake News on Social Media

Tirupati: Tirupati police has issued a stern warning against the dissemination of provocative content on social media and informed that decisive legal action would be taken against those who were trying to create disharmony by spreading misinformation or disinformation.

Chandragiri DSP T.D. Yaswanth made this announcement on Sunday responding to an incident that occurred in Mullapudi falling under the jurisdiction of the Tiruchanoor police station.

An individual conducted a religious puja at his residence, which escalated into a crisis due to the unfounded claims made on social media. Certain villagers falsely propagated that occult pujas were taking place in that house, putting the individual’s life at risk and creating unnecessary distress among the villagers.

“On October 14 around 10:30 pm, the Tiruchanoor Police received reports of alleged occult rituals transpiring at the residence of a local villager named Soma Shekhar in Mundlapudi. Police conducted a thorough investigation, during which no evidence supporting the claims of occult worship at Soma Shekhar’s home was discovered”, the DSP said.

“When questioned about the supposed occult pujas, Soma Shekhar clarified that he had constructed a house in Mundlapudi recently. With the intent of rectifying vaastu doshas, he performed navagraha shanti pujas on amavasya as recommended by a spiritual guru. However, the villagers misunderstood the purpose of these pujas and propagated false information through social media and other media channels, which created unrest in the village”, DSP Yashwanth explained.

DSP sent a strong message to the public, warning that individuals engaged in occult rituals or those who intentionally spread false and alarming claims of such activities on social media platforms would face serious legal consequences.
