Election Commission Adopts Picture Over Hand-Drawn Symbol

Hyderabad: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has changed the way it presents the ‘road roller’ symbol on the EVMs — printing a picture instead of using the regular hand drawn symbol. The BRS had earlier protested that the hand-drawn image of the road roller resembled its car symbol. This was confusing voters, who were pressing the wrong symbol while wanting to vote for the BRS.

The BRS had pointed out that in the Munugode election in during the 2018 Assembly polls, and the November 2022 byelection, the road roller symbol, hand-drawn at that time, had secured thousands of votes.

However, for the ‘chapati roller’ symbol, which also slightly resembles car, the ECI is using the previous hand-drawn image. Following a series of representations submitted by BRS leaders, sources said the Election Commission decided to print a picture of a road roller to give clarity to voters.
