Vellimadukunnu home inmates insecure from migrant workers
Kozhikode: Ten homes of the social justice department in Vellimadukunnu sheltering more than 200 women are under threat from the migrant workers who also reside inside the campus. The women's homes also accommodate minors. Some 57 workers, all of them from outside the state, are allowed to stay back on the campus, and not given any separate accommodation outside after their work there, confirm officials. Adding to the security threat are the remains of the tobacco and other products widely dumped by these men. They stay there for construction and renovation works of the buildings connected to Gender Park that include juvenile homes for boys and girls, an old age home, Mahila Mandiram, aftercare home, short stay home, observation home, home for the mentally deficient children and Asha Bhavan.
“The department has taken no measures to shift the workers from the campus after the works. During the inauguration of the Gender Park, day and night construction works were being carried out. However, the problem is when they dump the remains of the tobacco products they use on the campus. The small children tend to use them when they are lying scattered there,” said an official. The construction works were sublet to another agency, and they continue late in the evening, the official added. However, the Gender Park officials were not available for comment.
