Now, Thiruvananthapuram to get makeover every month

The campaigners convinced IFFK festival director Kamal to join in so that the message can be spread.

Thiruvananthapuram: The team, which was entrusted with implementing green protocol on Tagore Theatre complex, is planning an extensive campaign in Thiruvananthapuram aimed at changing people's attitudes. They will choose dump sites in the city, which will be cleaned and beautified. Every month, one site will undergo a makeover. Though the makeover of dump sites may not be a new idea, the immediate inspiration for such a campaign was their Tagore Theatre stint. Though waste bins were provided, many delegates chose to litter the space.

The volunteers, who launched a clean-up, were saddened by the fact that the spaces they cleaned became strewn with waste in a matter of hours. The campaigners convinced IFFK festival director Kamal to join in so that the message can be spread. But interestingly, one of the delegates was heard asking, "don't they have workers to pick the waste? Why should the filmmaker do this?"

It is to address the attitude of the public that the team from the organisation, Green Village, is about to embark on a clean-up all over Thiruvananthapuram. Green Village programme manager P.S. Babitha told DC that they will approach Thiruvananthapuram corporation to get a list of the dump sites. "The corporation has mapped the waste dumps in the city with the help of green city coordinators. We hope to be able to do that. Otherwise, we will lose time over the survey," she said. After the makeover, the team will also suggest a sustainable solution to manage waste. It could be community composting bins in the case of flats or kitchen bins in the residential colonies nearby.
