KOCHI: The predicament of the self-financing engineering colleges in the state continues with 28 of them not getting any student in one or two branches after the deadline ended on Saturday for taking admission under the second allotment process of the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations for 50 percent seats. The number of seats that remain vacant in government quota after second allotment is 13,900. Students can’t join the Central Allotment Process after July 15 which means this figure could go up.
According to official sources, out of the 24,400 BTech seats, a total of 10,500 students have taken admission in all the colleges under the allotment process. A total of 21 out of 117 colleges could secure students in less than 30 seats overall. In the Thrissur-based Sree Ernakulathappan College of Engineering where allotment was given in 131 seats, only 18 students took admission, erasing controversies that there was fault in the allotment process initiated by the CEE.
Sources said students with no serious intention to pursue engineering studies would have given options to these colleges. The hardest hit branch in the process is the Electronics and Communication (ECE) where the maximum number of seats has fallen vacant.

There are over 50 colleges which have less than five students in many branches which also shows the continuing poor status of self-financing engineering colleges in the state.
