ICT returns to Kerala's primary school textbooks
Thiruvananthapuram: IT@School will soon launch edutainment platform for primary classes through its new textbook named Kalipetty, or Playbox. The text book would integrate games and meaningful learning situations. The aim is to instill in students responsiveness to neighbourhoods and enhance learning through language, mathematics and geography.
Kalipetty also marks the re-entry of ICT textbooks in primary classes after they were taken off in 2014-15.
K. Anvar Sadath, executive director of IT@School told DC that these textbooks would benefit around 15 lakhs students studying in primary classes in the state. The textbooks contain educational applications like GCompris which is a collation of learning games for students of 2 to 14 years of age. Softwares like pySioGame, Ominitux and Tuxpaint would help in enhancing logical thinking, co-relations and memorisations in kids. While Anagramarama education software can be used to create word puzzles, said Mr Sadath.
In addition, the upgraded version of Gnu/Linux Operating System prepared by IT@School for primary classes incorporate interactive educational applications that can easily be handled by students. The software package includes hundreds of exercises that are not limited to those remarked in the ICT textbooks, Mr Sadath said.
ICT education in primary section is aimed at a process of learning interesting findings through self-study, fun games and observations. The new ICT textbooks are packed with fun games that integrate learning processes of mathematics, geography and linguistics.
The games are organised in such a manner to equip the students with various primary class contents such as arithmetic trainings, noun-based exercises, classroom activities such as reading, drawing, storyboard, comprehension, numeric, dialogues, pattern making and colour acquaintance stage by stage, said Mr Sadath.
The plan was to introduce the books this academic year itself, even though it is late. The training for teachers on dealing with the text book would commence soon. The text books would reach schools by November, Mr Sadath added.
