Chennai: The 9.4 foot dump yard at Kannadapalayam of Tambaram would soon be suppressed to ground, as the officials of the Tambaram Municipality on Wednesday consented to the direction of National Green Tribunal’s southern bench to indulge in a scientific closure of the site.
Tambaram municipal commissioner C. Mathivanan who was present at the court, told Deccan Chronicle that the municipality is mulling over either of the two options to close the 2.34 acre dump yard, Biomining or converting to a garden.
The bench has asked the commissioner to submit the reply in the next hearing.
The landfill was an element of aggravation to hundreds of residents in the neighbourhood, who was deprived of opening their windows and doors, due to bad stench for more than ten years. Also, it is unfortunate that — unlike Perungudi and Kodungaiyur — the landfill has no compound wall.
A resident, P. Vaidyanathan said, “Garbage is no more dumped by the Municipality as it is now processed at Vengadamangalam. However, the existing filling is enough to cause health hazards.”
Admitting that the dump has been causing a plethora of problems, Tambaram commissioner said, “Through bio-mining, waste would be segregated and filtered to remove the non-biodegradable material. It would then be made to Refuse-derived fuel by shredding the solid waste and given to cement factories, to use it as fuel.”
DC had earlier reported about the other option of converting the landfill to a garden by spreading it to the two-acre land and introducing the new sand. However, officials ruled out the option as recyclables are a hindrance. The municipality would send a detailed project report to the municipal commissioner at the earliest.
