TN officials did not take team to places ravaged by floods: BJP

Chennai: Continuing his onslaught against the DMK government, BJP State president accused the State officials of not taking the team sent by the Union Home Ministry to the areas that were really affected by the floods bought by Cyclone Michaung like the Ambattur Industrial Estate that had suffered a loss of about Rs 2000 crore.

After covering up so much from the visiting team of secretaries of the Union Government, the State government was indulging in chest beating over the team praising it for the good work in providing relief to the victims of the flood and also taking adequate preventive measures in advance, Annamalai told the media at the airport on Saturday when he went there to receive Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, who arrived by a special flight.

Stating that the BJP had placed a demand for increasing the relief amount to the victims to Rs 10,000, Annamalai said that the officers who came from Delhi would be national carried away by what their counterparts in the State, who took them around, told them but the BJP would not take their word at all.

The BJP would act the people’s representatives even if the officers followed their traditions to not blame the State government, he said adding that of the Rs 10,000 relief that they were demanding to be given to victims of flood, 75 per cent would be borne by the Union Government and State would have to pay only 25 per cent of the amount.

Criticizing State Minister for Youth Affairs Udhayanidhi Stalin for pointing fingers at the Union Government, accusing it of inaction, he said he had forgotten that it was the State government that failed to mitigate the problems of the people during the disaster.

The BJP would never criticize the State government for its failure and even if the Prime Minister came down he would not express his sympathies to the people without blaming the government but such courtesies should not be taken on face value, he said.

Similarly a Chief Minister should not boast over a certificate given by Government officials because they would only be inclined to console people at times of distress and on those lines even Rajnath Singh would not blame anybody, he said.

However, the Chief Minister should accept that his government failed in its responsibility, Annamalai said, adding that the Union Ministers visited the State only to extend help and not to blame anybody.
