Nellore: In order to ensure better hygiene standards and provide a facelift to Nellore, the corporation authorities have devised an action plan to streamline the activities of the sanitary department.
As part of the action plan, 166 vehicles are being allotted to 166 ward secretariats in order to collect garbage, which has been segregated into three types — wet, dry and hazardous — at the collection point.
Nearly four lakh plastic dust bins are being distributed to households, with three bins for each house to deposit segregated waste.
In addition to the 166 vehicles, 14 more are being acquired to collect bulk waste exclusively from commercial establishments such as hotels and malls.
All vehicles are being fitted with GPS trackers and the route is being fixed for each vehicle with a live tracking facility to monitor their movement from the command control centre being established at the corporation office.
“We are assigning routes to each vehicle and are indicating its arrival time at garbage pickup point to denizens through pamphlets in order to avoid any delay. Any deviation from the route will be immediately notified to the concerned authorities through an automatically generated SMS,” said Nellore civic body’s health officer Dr M. Venkata Ramana.
Online composting sites have been established for dry waste in 12 places across the city, he told DC, adding that their goal is to make Nellore city free of garbage.
We are also working on details to penalise those who dump garbage on roads and open spaces, he said.
