Southern districts secure more than 90 per cent pass
Madurai: The students of nine districts in southern Tamil Nadu may not have secured any of the top three ranks in the Class 12 state board exam, but they have performed better by securing more than 90% in pass percentage.
Tirunelveli secured 94.76; Virudhunagar 95.73; Thoothukudi 95.47; Theni 95.11; Kanyakumari 95.7; Sivaganga 95.07; Ramanathapuram 95.04; Madurai 93.19 and Dindigul 90.48 percentage in the exam. However, Virudhunagar lost its first place this year.
The district that had held the first place for 28 consecutive years before being pushed to third place in 2013-14, managed to retain it in the last year. “We are disappointed at losing it again this year,” said members of the teaching community in Virudhunagar. In Theni, students secured seven ranks in overall pass percentage in the state.
In most of the districts girls performed better than boys. For instance in Madurai, girls secured 95.82 pass percent (boys 90.36 percent); in Theni girls secured 97.07 (boys 93.03 percent); in Virudhunagar girls secured 97.65 (boys 93.03).
The Indian Association for the Blind Higher Secondary School at Sunarajanpatti near Madurai secured the state third rank among the visually challenged. All the 31 students who appeared from the school passed the exam, while P Arun Kumar secured 1138 marks.
In Virudhunagar, 34 students who studied in a special school run for children rescured from child labour and educated under the National Child Labour Project (NCLP) passed in the exam. M Gayathri secured 1,021 marks and M. Jalfiya Sheerin secured 1,004 marks in the exam.
In Madurai district, Shripriya from Velammal Matriculation higher secondary school emerged as district first scoring 1,190 marks; Shreenidhi Karthika from St Jones Matriculation HSS secured second rank with 1,189 marks and Naga Nandhini from St Joseph Girls HSS secured third rank with 1,187 marks.
