Kerala: Aviation tourism plan gains speed
KOTTAYAM: The Idukki District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has conducted a preliminary assessment and sent a report to the government recommending amphibious aviation tourism at five different places. The report identified three water strips - Mattupetty dam, Idukki reservoir and Thekkady lake - and two land strips where small planes can land with tourists. "We have sent a report to the tourism department pointing out the potential of aviation tourism in the district. We suggested engaging some agencies for a feasibility study," Idukki district collector G.R. Gokul told DC.
"The district administration is planning to connect the main destinations here, and the technical aspects have to be studied properly by competent agencies." According to the (DTPC) sources, they are planning the functioning of an amphibious aeroplane in which five persons can travel at a time. "We have received a proposal from a Canadian company for a joint venture. They will implement the project provided the DTPC makes a proper place for the landing of aeroplanes. Any such decisions will be taken only after receiving the government's permission," DTPC executive committee member C.V. Varghese told DC.
