Niravu tie-up helps clear waste in Kozhikode

The project will be extended to all 75 wards in the coming months.

Kozhikode: The tie-up between resident associations in the City with Niravu- a farmers’ collective specialising in organic farming and waste management for clearing raw materials from residential areas, is getting a good response.

The project which started in June has been taken up by over 150 resident associations in nearly 15 corporation wards and 520 metric cube raw materials from City dwellers has been collected so far.

The project will be extended to all 75 wards in the coming months. Niravu will collect segregated raw materials from each resident association and transport it to their Segregation and Recycling Unit in Mandya in Karnataka as part of the project.

The resident associations in the ward will pay the cost of transport which will in turn be divided among the residents. “In Vengeri ward, we are successfully doing this for the last ten years. Now more wards have come forward to take up this initiative. Our aim is to create a culture among people not to throw such raw material outside, but to keep it systematically,” said Babu Parambath, Niravu Project Coordinator.

According to this plan for waste management, each resident has to keep three covers in the house- one each for plastics, one for non-biodegradable waste like school bags, vanity bags etc and one for crockery items and glass pieces. Once all the residents keep the bags ready, Niravu will collect them in trucks. A bag of waste costs approximately Rs 70 - Rs 80.

Chevarambalam councillor E Prasanth Kumar, who implemented the project in June, said that the project got a good response from residents.

“All 12 resident associations in my ward wholeheartedly joined in the project and we could shift four loads of raw material including plastic, glass etc. We are planning to collect and shift raw materials every six months and also to conduct awareness classes for residents,” he added.
