Kozhikode: Agencies clear flood waste

According to experts, mixed waste would accumulate in the flooded areas.

Kozhikode: The rain and the floods have left behind huge quantities of waste in many areas posing a threat to the environment and people's health.

According to experts, mixed waste would accumulate in the flooded areas. This has to be collected and segregated after drying. The non-recyclable waste can be used for landfill by approved agencies.

The rest can be supplied to the plants where waste is the raw material, including modern ones which transform it into fuel.

Last year, the Clean Kerala Company and the Kerala Enviro Infrastructure limited (KEIL), Kochi, had disposed of the flood waste. KEIL scientifically disposes of the non-recyclable waste.

"There are a few plants outside the state where they make alternative fuel after burning the waste at a specific temperature and use them instead of coal. Electronic waste and glass materials cannot be used there.

After collecting the waste from each place, we supply the materials to such plants," said Jabir Karat, Chief Executive Officer of Green Worms, a waste management agency here.

"The municipalities or corporations should collect the waste from households and inform agencies like us. E-waste can be sent to the recycling companies outside the state.

Last year, we collected many e-wastes and plastic bottles. This year also we are ready to take up the task," he added.

"The local bodies have to collect the wastes from households and relief camps. There are many collection centres for e-waste from where a vehicle is arranged to shift the materials to agencies in tie-up with Clean Kerala Company for recycling," said K. Mujeeb, district-level assistant manager of Clean Kerala Company.

"This year, the collection is still going on. But the continuing rain has affected the collection and segregation," he added.
