Man with Rs 22 lakh in foreign currency, new Rs 2k notes detained in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad: A man possessing foreign currency and new Rs 2,000 notes totally valuing over Rs 22.50 lakh was detained by police here today.
The 36-year-old suspect, who hails from Nashik, was detained from Vatva locality with 75 currency notes of Rs 2,000 denomination valued at Rs 1.5 lakh, apart from 625 Pound and 46 Saudi Riyal, total valued at Rs 22.50 lakh, Vatva police official said.
"During routine checking of vehicles, we found the suspect was standing on the roadside with a bag, trying to flee after spotting the police. The cops detained him on suspicion," said Vatva police sub-inspector S A Gohil.
"The exchange value of 625 Pound stood at Rs 17.32 lakh and that of 46 Saudi Riyal at Rs 3.64 lakh," Gohil said.
The police claimed that the suspect had come to Ahmedabad to deliver the money to an unidentified person at the behest of his employer in Nashik, Gohil said, adding that he will be handed over to the Income Tax department after further questioning.
