11.40 lakh family disputes pending: SC judge

HYDERABAD: Supreme Court judge Justice V. Ramasubramanian on Saturday said that over 11.40 lakh family disputes are pending in various courts in the country.

He was speaking after inaugurating the ‘Integrated Courts on Family Disputes’ at Purani Haveli in Hyderabad on Saturday. It has been named as ‘Kalpataru’.
This integrated complex is for the jurisdiction of the Hyderabad district and all the family disputes will be dealt with in this complex henceforth.

The family courts in Hyderabad, which have around 6,000 pending cases, are currently working in the Civil Court Complex. Around 19,000 family disputes are pending in Telangana.

Justice Ramasubramanian said that such a setup is necessary today because the children who are part of the family disputes get traumatized when they see the regular courts.

He appreciated Chief Justice of Telangana High Court Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice P. Naveen Rao for taking initiative to set up this complex with facilities like psychiatrist services, counselling, yoga, and meditation.

Justice P.S. Narasimha of the top court said that the process of mediation is best in cases of family disputes.

Supreme Court’s Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar said that the need to establish family courts was first emphasized by the late Durgabai Deshmukh after a tour of China in 1953. The Family Courts Act was enacted in 1984. After 15 years of this, undivided Andhra Pradesh set up the family court in 1999. Now, there is a need to have separate court complexes for this issue as family disputes involve emotions and feelings.
