Thiruvananthapuram: Concrete facts upset thieves

Modernised police, secure houses shrink burglary rate.

Thiruvananthapuram: Thanks to modernised police and secure houses, the burglaries and thefts have come down in 16 out of 19 police districts in recent years.

As per the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB), 3882 burglaries and 5818 thefts were reported in the state in 2008, but the number has come down to 2585 burglaries and 3840 thefts by 2016.

Police officials said that technological advancement such as mobile phone tower tracking had helped raise the detection levels and pin down habitual offenders.

Thiruvananthapuram: IG (Thiruvananthapuam Range) Manoj Abraham pointed out that tiled roof houses being replaced by concrete houses had caused a gradual drop in burglaries and traditional theft cases. The census data shows that, as burglary drops the numbers of houses with concrete roofs also have been rising by 5 per cent on an average every year.

While the drop in burglaries is substantial in urban areas, it is not drastic in rural areas. The cases of burglaries and thefts have increased in Thrissur, Wayand and Kasargod districts struck most frequently by interstate gangs.

Thiruvananthapuram city which recorded 220 burglaries and 441 thefts in 2010 reported only 118 burglaries and 241 thefts last year. On the other hand, Idukki which reported 160 burglaries and 157 thefts in 2011 reported a slight dip of 124 burglaries and 125 thefts in 2016.
