Day care centre for elderly to come up in Sircilla

Officials have already identified the DRDA training centre building in Yellareddypet mandal headquarters for establishing the centre

KARIMNAGAR: The state government is planning to set up a first-of-its-kind day care centre for senior citizens to provide them with a safe and secure space for living and give them much-needed emotional and mental support for their physical wellbeing here in Rajanna Sircilla district.

This initiative by IT minister and Sircilla MLA K.T. Rama Rao and the district administration under the leadership of district collector Anurag Jayanti is aimed at helping senior citizens meet their same age group people and spend some quality time with them and thus create a healthier senior citizens community.

Officials have already identified the DRDA training centre building in Yellareddypet mandal headquarters for establishing the day care centre which has a capacity to accommodate around 100 members along with 15 temporary beds for taking rest.

Apart from creating a pleasant atmosphere in the day care centre, officials are going to provide facilities including a library with various kinds of books, magazines and newspapers, a television set, toilets separately for men and women and pure drinking water facilities.

For keeping elderly people busy and not to make them suffer from dementia (loss of memory) which is usually found in many, the officials are also going to make special arrangements and are going to conduct various activities like memory games, caroms, chess, and singing competitions along with providing basic medical services like physiotherapy, meditation, medical checks up and counselling sessions.

District collector Anurag Jayanti, who inspected the DRDA building along with district welfare officer Lakshmirajam, MPDO Chirnajeevi and tahsildar Jayant, said that the day care centre would be ready within 15 days and was established with an aim to minimize the social isolation of elderly people and to create a pleasant and positive atmosphere for them.

By making elderly people spend their time with their contemporaries as friends, talk and give advice and support would make them lead a healthy social and personal life, he said. “The day care centre also helps us to create more awareness among the people about the issues faced by senior citizens and how to tackle them,” he added.
