Widespread rains in Nizamabad
NIZAMABAD: Widespread rains lashed Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts in the last two days. An orange alert has been sounded on the district while the water flows in streams and rivulets increased in both the districts.
On Tuesday, 1396.8mm of rain was recorded in Nizamabad district. Some 9901.0mm of rainfall was registered in the district from June 1 as against the normal rainfall of 33525.9mm. Of 33 districts, Navipet, Nandipet and Varni mandals received excess rainfall and Kammarpally, Dharpally, Jakranpally, Mugpal and Nizamabad South mandals were faced with deficit rainfall. Some 25 mandals received normal rainfall.
The Vana Kalam (kharif) agriculture operations that were delayed due to the dry spell has gained pace as rains lashed the district.
The farming community had a sigh of relief as the downpour continued due to the cyclone effect in the Bay of Bengal. Seeds sown in the agriculture fields will be grown as usual as the current rainfall will benefit them.
In view of the widespread rains, district collector RG Hanumanthu reviewed the situation in Nizamabad. He asked irrigation officials to be on alert over the levels in water tanks.
In Nizamabad municipal corporation limits, the low-lying areas were inundated. Malapally, Mujahidnagar, Arsapally, Autonagar, Khoja colony, NRI colony, Chandrasekharnagar colony, Gouthamnagar, Ambedkarnagar, Anandnagar, Sanjeevaiah colony, Vinayaknagar, Canal katta etc witnessed floods. The drains were overflowing in residential areas. The government school premises in Gupanpally were inundated. The locals alleged that officials failed to create a stormwater drainage system.
Meanwhile, the water level in the Sriramsagar project was at 1071.2 feet on Tuesday as against its full reservoir level of 1091.00 ft. The storage has reached 31.425tmc as against its gross storage capacity of 90tmc ft.
