Kotagiri stares at water shortage after poor rains

People in Kotagiri are pleading for early action to implement the Hallakarai water scheme to cater to the water needs of Kotagiri hills.

KOTAGIRI: With no sufficient mercy from the rain Gods over the past few months, the hill town of Kotagiri has begun to reel under a drinking water crisis as the main reservoir has almost dried up. People in Kotagiri are pleading for early action to implement the Hallakarai water scheme to cater to the water needs of Kotagiri hills.

Kotagiri, the land of tea and picturesque landscape beauty, is known for its unique hill weather profile and as a much sought after tourist resort in the hills.
Besides Kotagiri Township, there are many hamlets that make up the topography of Kotagiri. Though water sources, including the Elada reservoir which is the major source of drinking water for Kotagiri, are enough to cater to the drinking water needs of the Kotagiri hills, the insufficient south-west monsoon rains and scarce rainfall over the months have dried up reservoirs and streams.

Saying that getting drinking water has become an issue to deal with now, Ms.Vani, a resident in the Elada sector said that efforts must be made by the administration to find a solution for the water crisis.

“It is generally said that water from Nilgiris flows down to the plains up to Bhavanisagar. It is pathetic to note that Kotagiri is reeling under a water shortage with no plan of action from the concerned officials to redress the grievance,” she added.
