Direct flow of sewage kills Pallapalayam lake
Coimbatore: Due to lack of proper sewer network in the Pappampatti area near Sulur, millions of liters of sewage water are directly released into the Pallapalayam lake near Sulur in Coimbatore, posing huge environmental hazards.
The poor and lower middle class houses located near the lake and others
let their sewage directly into the lake. The local Pallapalayam village administration also did the same thing through nearby canals. The canals originating from Sulur lake run for a length of five-km and finally it reaches Pallapalayam lake.
Many village administrations in and around the Sulur area have developed sewage network system that ends up in canals, which lead to the Pallapalayam lake. Every day, millions of liters sewage water is released into the canal, which finally reach the lake.
Due to high organic content in the lake water, green algae grow very fast. Most of the lake is covered by green algae, which almost killed the fishes by sucking oxygen from the water. Now the lake has turned lifeless without fauna and flora.
“Before 20 years, nearly ten fishermen families depended on the lake for their livelihood. After sewage discharge into the lake gradually increased over the years, which led to decline in fish population, forcing us to find other jobs” said P. Munusamy, a former lake fisherman.
