MVR Cancer Centre and Research Institute to have latest technologies

MVRCCRI is one of the few hospitals in South India that will be acquiring the technology.

KOZHIKODE: MVR Cancer Centre and Research Institute (MVRCCRI) that is getting ready for the inauguration on January 17 aims at providing the best treatment on a non-profit basis, its promoters said on Sunday. It will be the second hospital in the country to adopt the latest technologies including linear accelerator (LINAC). The cancer centre is built on a 15.5-acre plot, and the state government has included the project under ‘Mission 676’ of the cooperative sector.

Chief operating officer and vice-president Dr Shinoop Raj said the not-for-profit treatment facility would ensure the latest cancer treatment facilities at an affordable cost. “We are introducing the latest in technological innovations some of which are firsts in the country and some firsts in the state," he said. “The one such advanced facility is LINAC used in radiation therapy that comes with accurate measurement of dose delivery. Our centre will be the second in the country after PGIMER hospital in Chandigarh to acquire the high-end technology."

Digital mammography is another striking feature of the centre, with tomosynthesis that allows more accurate detection of breast cancer with less discomfort. MVRCCRI is one of the few hospitals in South India that will be acquiring the technology. “We procured this equipment for the diagnostics department because of the increasing numbers of breast cancer here," he said. In the first phase, the centre will have 300 beds and will gradually increase the number with the progress of the hospital. “City Service Cooperative Bank has been for long wishing to do something big as part of the corporate social responsibility and a cancer care unit exclusively for Malabar fulfils it,” said MVRCCRI chairman C.N. Vijayakrishnan.
