Fertility Conference to uncover the latest advancements in Infertility sector

Fertility clinic sees 30% increase in male infertility.

Hyderabad: Nova IVF Fertility, one of India's largest fertility chains, in association with the Indian Medical Association, Kukatpally, organized a continuous medical education program to discuss fertility health among men and women, along with advancements in Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART). The event discussed various concerns of fertility health like vitamin D and its role in fertility, technology in IVF lab, Endocrine disruptors like Thyroid issues, PCOS and its relationship with fertility. The event took place at Hotel Sitara Grand, Hyderabad on the 17th of December 2023.

A prevailing misconception regarding infertility often revolves around the belief that females bear sole responsibility for reproductive challenges. In reality, it is essential to recognize that fertility issues frequently stem from both male and female factors. Experts at Nova IVF Fertility in Hyderabad have noted an uptick in both male and female infertility problems.

Speaking at the event on Male Infertility, Dr Saroja Koppala, Fertility Consultant at Nova IVF Fertility, Kukatpally, Hyderabad said, “According to a meta-analysis, there has been a substantial 50% decrease in sperm counts between 1973 and 2011. Stigma surrounding infertility often discourages couples from seeking timely assistance. In Hyderabad, there has been a notable rise of especially male infertility. There are some underlying medical conditions in men like Diabetes, Testicular cancer, genetic issues, which can potentially cause infertility issues. Hence just a plain semen analysis will not be able to diagnose the root cause of infertility issues. There is an urgent need to get a detailed medical history of the patient and assess them thoroughly. A delay in evaluation in these men may have an adverse impact on their treatment, for example both testicular and pituitary tumours are fast growing but potentially curable.”

Dr Banu Teja Reddy, Consultant - Urologist and Microsurgical Andrologist & Male Infertility Specialist, said “We have observed approximately a 30% increase in the male infertility. Several factors such as sedentary lifestyle, stress, bad food habits, sexual intimacy conditions like Erectile Dysfunction and can cause infertility among men. Additionally hormonal imbalances, varicocele, low sperm count, genetic predispositions, obesity, and addictions such as smoking, tobacco chewing, or alcoholism further contribute to this rise. Unexplained male infertility is on the rise, and currently, only 30-50% of infertility cases can be completely treated. The 35-45 age group is particularly affected, with conditions pertaining to low sperm count, abnormal shape of sperms, and problems pertaining to movement of sperms. Establishing an environment of compassion, education, and open communication is vital to empower couples to overcome their fears and seek the necessary medical guidance.”
