Big salaries for better ranking of students
Hyderabad: Salaries for lecturers teaching subjects like math, physics and chemistry at private colleges have shot up.
Two noted private institutions that have IIT foundation courses are shelling out Rs 1 crore to Rs 1.5 crore as annual pay for three to four lecturers, who are overseeing students expecting ranks.
The task of the lecturers is to ensure that the students don’t lose their momentum and achieve ranks at state and national-level entrance tests, a lecturer from a private college in the city said.
In the next category are lecturers getting between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 50 lakh per annum. Two top private colleges have around 150 lecturers in this pay bracket.
Next is the Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh per annum salary category followed by the Rs 3 lakh to Rs 6 lakh. Unlike experience, which counts in other jobs, the criteria here is different, a lecturer said. Besides having the talent to teach, one should comply entirely with the management.
Lecturers in day colleges make anywhere between Rs 50,000 and Rs 75,000 including monthly salary and earnings from tuitions and private classes. Telangana Lecturers Forum president Kathi Venkataswamy said that this shows that post-graduates and not only IT professionals, are earning big in the teaching line.
“This trend is due to the demand for entrance tests like Eamcet, IIT, AIIMS and JIPMER among students and parents. Private colleges are offering fat pay cheques to talented lecturers to ensure top ranks,” he said.
He said these institutions rope in teaching faculty from AIIMS and IITs to motivate and guide students preparing for national entrance tests. They come on one or two-day trips and are paid up to '1 lakh including free air travel and accommodation, he said.
