Thiruvananthapuram: Revision in slaughterhouse project

Project which could be cut down on scale under consideration.

Thiruvananthapuram: Thiruvananthapuram Corporation’s slaughterhouse project is getting completely revised, as it will not be possible to implement the major project envisioned by the civic body. A project, which would cut down on the scale at least by half, is being considered. Mayor V. K. Prasanth will be meeting Suchitwa Mission officials, who have been offering technical support for the project, on August 29 for a discussion.

It was Suchitwa Mission which had suggested the revision. Mission executive director K. Vasuki says that the project originally proposed by the Corporation was not feasible as it did not follow the rules and regulations governing the licensing of slaughterhouses. The Rs 30-crore project had envisioned a complete revamp, in which the present building would be brought down, and a new facility which would have the capacity to slaughter 100 animals per day would be built. However, the Kunnukuzhy slaughterhouse will not be able to maintain the minimum distance from neighbourhood houses required for such a big project.

Since it was difficult to identify a new location in the city for the project, the other option was to reduce the capacity of the slaughterhouse. After studying the draft Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted, Suchitwa Mission officials have suggested that within the existing building, a 50 animal-per-day facility be built. This will bring down the cost to at least Rs 15 crores. In the plant, modern slaughterhouse machines like an effluent treatment plant and a rendering plant which can turn all waste from the slaughter to animal feed. Now a revised DPR is being prepared. Only after it is approved by the Corporation, Kerala State Pollution Control Board, Health Department, Boiler and Factories Department as well as Fire and Safety Department, it will move towards implementation.
