Kerala schools to go in solar mode

Power minister M.M. Mani said it would cut energy costs and make a lasting impression on students.

KOZHIKODE: Agency for Non-conventional Energy and Rural Technology (ANERT) is getting ready for its new project to help schools generate solar power by the next academic year. In the first phase, government schools will get this opportunity to switch over to solar energy utilising their large flat roofs. Power minister M.M. Mani said it would cut energy costs and make a lasting impression on students. “Not only will these systems contribute to environmental sustainability, but to the financial stability of schools in the years ahead," he said.

“Other than the industrial areas, schools and colleges consume more power. Their rooftops are the best places to install solar panels," ANERT district engineer P. Sirajuddin said. Each school will also get subsidies. The ANERT’s latest Solar Smart Grid Connect will install the system costing Rs 95,000 to generate two kilowatts of power, and additional capacity, up to 100 kilowatts, will cost extra. The schools will get a 50 percent subsidy. “Beyond the cost savings, solar power is a key component of long-term sustainability strategy,” he said. Already nearly 20 schools in the state, mainly the aided schools, have initiated the project at a minimal level.
