Bengaluru: Infosys Techie From AP Dies As Car Gets Stuck In Flooded Underpass

Visakhapatnam: A software engineer from Andhra Pradesh drowned after the car, in which she was travelling with her family of six, was stuck in the stormwater at an underpass near KR Circle in Bengaluru on Sunday evening. The deceased was identified as Bhanurekha, a native of Vijayawada. She was working in a software company in Bengaluru.

As Bhanurekha and her family members were trapped in the car at the underpass, the police personnel rescued five others of her family and the driver, with the help of locals. The victim and another woman were rushed to a corporate hospital where Bhanurekha died while undergoing treatment.

The victims’ family came to Bengaluru to visit the city from Hyderabad. The hour-long thunderstorm accompanied by strong gales created mayhem in the city on Sunday afternoon following a low pressure in the Arabian Sea. Trees were uprooted and as a result, many vehicles were destroyed.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the hospital and consoled the family members of Bhanurekha and announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh. He later reviewed the ravage caused by the hailstorm in the city.

It is said that there was rainfall of 30 mm in Bengaluru city on Sunday evening which lasted for about an hour.

Reports said key areas like Majestic, Race Course, KR Circle, Town Hall, Corporation, Mysore Bank Circle, Jaynagar and Malliswar were flooded with knee-deep water. A luxury car was crushed under a tree in the Race Course area and a car and motorcycle were destroyed at Ramakrishna Road near Chitrakala Parishad. Reports added that many people sustained injuries when they were hit by flying objects and crashing trees.

Janata Dal Secular leader and former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy alleged ‘negligence’ on part of officials concerned of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and stated that BBMP officials knew very well about the intensity of the rainfall but no precautionary measures initiated by them.
