KMRL to hold survey of Kochi roads
KOCHI: As part of conducting a detailed study on developing an integrated transport solution for Kochi and constitution of the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA), Kochi Metro Rail Limited is conducting a total-station survey of roads.
“We will be conducting a comprehensive survey of roads, bus stops and Metro stations in the city. The Union ministry of Urban Development is funding the project worth Rs. 1.25 crore. KMRL will soon float tenders for identifying an agency and the mapping will be completed by the end of this year,” said a top official with KMRL. The mapping is expected to facilitate the transport system in a big way.
The City Corporation has earlier done a total-station survey of roads with all the city roads having a width of more than three metres being mapped. Meanwhile, the City Corporation has proposed to conduct a GIS mapping of drains and canals in the city as part of preparing a climate resilient strategy.
During a conference on climate change adaptation strategies conducted by the City Corporation and International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), South Asia, the KMRL official remarked that possibilities for including the GIS mapping in the MoUD-funded survey could be looked into.
The civic body is planning to conduct the mapping of Thevara – Perandoor Canal first as it is the arterial water draining outlet in the city. Rockefeller Foundation which is funding the Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network (ACCCRN) programme for which Kochi has been selected, will provide the financial assistance of nearly '35 lakh for carrying out the mapping.
