Chennai cops to counsel students, parents
Chennai: In a novel initiative, the City police are planning to crack down on intra-campus and inter-campus rivalries among students in establishing their supremacy over others through counselling of students and parents.
The violence among students on board an Electric-Multiple-Unit (EMU) in neighbouring Tiruvallur district on Tuesday signifies the tension simmering among students and the critical need for tackling it before it spills over to the city.
Sources said the troublemakers from three colleges— Government Arts College (Men)—Nandanam, Presidency College and Pachaiyappa’s college—had been enumerated. Delving deep into the concept, a senior police official observed that the enumerated list of the said colleges would be shared with the respective DCPs of Adyar, and Triplicane, and Kilpauk police districts.
“The DCPs will then take it forward with the respective colleges, and collect details of the parents/guardians. Once that database is ready, the counselling sessions will be conducted. Based on the success rate, the cops might extend this project to other city colleges as well,” said a senior police official.
The city police have also enumerated the sensitive routes based on the past incidents and with the quantum student passenger traffic on the routes.
Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) officials have agreed to install CCTV cameras in all the sensitive routes enumerated in the city. The cops have also started sending the FIR copies to the concerned colleges where the students study.
This is a police station level initiative which is aimed at aiding the college administration to take disciplinary action against the students concerned.
Besides, a detailed dossier of a slew of measures to be adhered to in the city colleges has been prepared and sent to the government for its consideration to ensure the city was free from student violence.
The key recommendation in it is the transfer of longstanding faculty from the colleges, as in the case of other government departments including the police department.
