Among 2 girls held for burglary.

Chennai: One of the two minor girls who were lodged in the Kelly’s Government Observation Home for Girls fled on Wednesday through Otteri Nulla, the route which 33 more minor boys tried their luck in with an escape attempt over a week ago.

Police said the home was housing only the two girls, both picked up in a burglary case reported in Aminjikarai Police station, at the time of the incident and one of them was being taken to the Juvenile Justice Board.

The one who was left behind was privy to the itinerary of the other and was lying in wait for the cook-cum-warden to leave with the inmate. The duo left for the hearing at the JJB at around 9.30 am. The minor sneaked out of the home’s kitchen door to the main concourse and scaled the back compound wall. A staffer who spotted the ordeal raised an alarm. The girl lowered herself into the water channel and disappeared.

The case in which she was arrested pertains to the burglary of 175 sovereigns of gold and diamond jewellery and cash Rs 1 lakh reported at the residence of Anna Nagar resident R. Lakshmanaswamy.

On July 3, the businessman had gone to a temple with his family and on return found his house burgled. The case was cracked with the help of the CCTV images. The girl was arrested along with Velakanni (27), Periya Nadiya (23), Selvi (30) and Geetha (35), who are residents of Ennore Tsunami quarters and three other juveniles, two boys and a girl.
