Rampa Revolt Centenary at Chintapalli on Monday
VISAKHAPATNAM: Centenary celebrations of Rampa Rebellion are being organised at Chintapalli in ASR district on Monday.
Kshatriya Seva Samithi is organising these celebrations with union tribal welfare minister Arjun Munda as the chief guest. Union tourism minister G. Kishan Reddy and AP tourism minister K. Roja Reddy will attend as special guests. Deputy chief minister Peedika Rajanna Dora will also attend the celebrations.
Rampa Revolt, also referred to as Manyam Uprising, was a tribal insurgency led by Alluri Sitarama Raju in erstwhile Visakhapatnam district, then under Madras Presidency. It began in August 1922 and lasted until Raju got arrested and killed in May 1924.
According to historians, the uprising began when the British Raj wanted to increase the economic utility of lands in tribal tracts by curbing traditional practices like podu cultivation.
Alluri Sitarama Raju did not belong to any tribal group. But he resented the British-imposed constraints on tribal life. He, along with 500 tribals, raided Chintapalli, Krishnadevipeta, and Rajavommangi police stations and took away 26 police carbine guns and 2,000 rounds of ammo with them.
Alluri Sitarama Raju was eventually apprehended, chained to a tree, and gunned down.
