Kudankulam 2nd unit to restart generation today

The second unit commenced generation at 300 mwe and is being increased in a phased manner to its full level of 1,000 mwe.

TIRUNELVELI: The second unit of the Kudankulam nuclear power project (KKNPP), power generation in which was suspended a week ago on November 12 to undergo power raise texts is to resume operation on Monday, November 21, according to KKNPP site director R.S. Sundar.

The second unit commenced generation at 300 mwe and is being increased in a phased manner to its full level of 1,000 mwe. After attaining its targeted generation point at every phase, the unit would be stopped to undergo post-power raising tests, which is mandatory as per the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). As per this norm, generation at the second unit was stopped on November 12th as it attained the generation point of 750 mwe, he said.

Mr Sundar added that the second unit would start commercial generation by January next year. Proudly claiming that the first unit under commercial operation has been giving 56 per cent of its electricity generation to Tamil Nadu, he added that the third and fourth units of 1,000 MW each, for which the foundation was laid on October 15 at the KKNPP complex, are to commence generation by 2023. He added that negotiations for the fifth and sixth reactors at the nuclear reactors complex are also in full swing.
