Nizamabad: A municipal engineer, who was caught by ACB, committed suicide here on Saturday. The engineer, Ch. Venkateshwarlu, 56, jumped from the third floor of his apartment. ACB officials caught the officer red-handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from Ramulu, a sub contractor.
The incident took place at his flat at Kanteshwer. ACB officials brought him to Nizamabad municipal office and checked documents. Before shifting him to judicial custody, ACB cops took him to his flat to get medicines. Venkateshwarlu jumped from the apartment building and ACB officials and neighbours immediately shifted him to the government general hospital, where he was declared dead.
Venkateshwarlu belongs to Prakasham district and is settled in Hyderabad. He is survived by his wife and two children. In November, 2015 he was posted at the Nizamabad municipal corporation.
Meanwhile, municipal staff, the Telangana Gazetted Officers Association and TNGO leaders rushed to the hospital and staged a dharna demanding the suspension of ACB DSP Narender Reddy and arrest of the contractor holding them responsible for the suicide death of the municipal engineer.
Nizamabad north zone ACP D. Anand Kumar told the protestors that they will register the case as custodial death. A judge will probe the incident and inquiries will be conducted, he said.
Tension griped the hospital and police was deployed to control the mob.
