Madurai: With a view to providing equal employment opportunity for all the students studying in more than 500 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu, K. Subramanian, former advocate general of Tamil Nadu, urged the Madurai Bench of Madras HC to direct the government to create a single window system similar to Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission counselling, by conducting an industry-eligible test for fresh recruitment by multinational companies.
Appearing with regard to a PIL filed by a person named Jawarharlal Nehru from Pappankadu village in Karur district seeking to evolve a transparent mechanism in campus placements in engineering colleges, Subramanian argued that than more than 500 private engineering colleges, eight government colleges, 17 Anna University Constituent Colleges and around ten deemed universities are functioning in the state. The MNCs are, however, following discriminatory practices by recruiting students only from around 40 colleges, that too without following any uniform recruitment procedures.
Nearly three lakh engineering college students are passing out from the colleges every year, but due to the unfair system adopted by the intending employers, most of the talent among first generation students studying in the government and private colleges was deprived of job opportunities, Subramanian pointed out.
These students, who hail from poor socioeconomic background, have obtained education loans to meet expenditure. Due to inequality in job opportunity, these bright engineering students are either forced to accept menial jobs or become anti-social elements out of frustration, he argued.
