Malappuram: Stay home beckons foster child
Kozhikode: Institutional care for a child is the least wished by any count. Many children’s homes are notorious for ignoring children’s needs and given a chance any child would love to escape from there.
But a 13-year old girl from Kalikavu in Malappuram has approached the authorities to allow her to spend Christmas vacation at the government-recognised Rosemanor short stay home for women and children in Vengara where she had spent almost six years.
“We have forwarded her request to the district child welfare committee (CWC) after an inquiry. She wanted to take a trip down memory lane and thank caretaker, superintendent and other staff besides seeing her friends,” said Malappuram district child protection officer (DCPO) Samir Machingal.
The Class VII student is under foster care protection by a couple in Kalikavu since 2014. “She had a helping attitude and kindness. If anyone is unwell, she would be around to offer any help," recalls Dhanya V., the superintendent.
“We met her only once under foster care, where she became smarter and joyful.”
The girl was found abandoned at Tirur bus stand at the age of five with bruises all over her body.
