NGT visit to decide plant fate

Fire broke out twice this month in the yard and the fire and rescue team could not reach near the garbage heaps due to lack of access.

Kochi: The crucial visit of the 25-member fact-finding team deputed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to the Kochi corporation and the Brahmapuram solid waste treatment plant scheduled for Thursday has kept the civic body on edge, given that an adverse report could result in the permanent closure of the plant that processes waste in the corporation and 8 municipalities. The team is expected to submit a report based on the inspection.

The corporation has of late been moving heaven and earth to put up a clean face before the team with a series of measures to improve the functioning of the plant.

"A temporary leachet treatment facility has been set up there which can treat 10,000 litres of leachate using electro-coagulation method every day," said mayor Soumini Jain. "A ring road is being constructed around it to improve access to the huge heaps of plastic waste within the yard, in case of an emergency situation like fire. The Corporation has also installed high-mast lights in the yard.

Fire broke out twice this month in the yard and the fire and rescue team could not reach near the garbage heaps due to lack of access. Ms Jain said the garbage is now being segregated from the huge piles dumped in the site over the years. "This will help treat and clear the archaic garbage heaps in a prioritised manner," she said.
