Activist Rajendra Singh wants compensation bill re-sent

He said that the government should be for the poor villages of Plachimada whose lives were ruined by the Coca Cola factory.

Palakkad: Renowned water conservationist and Ramon Magsaysay award winner Rajendra Singh has urged the LDF Government to re-send the Plachimada Tribunal Bill regarding the compensation of Rs 216.25 crore to be given to the resident of Plachimada village here, at the earliest. He was speaking after inaugurating the indefinite fast undertaken by the action council in front of the Collectorate here on Saturday demanding compensation for the Plachimada villagers for the pollution caused by Coca Cola company.

The Bill was earlier returned by the President to the Assembly in February 2016 citing that only the Green Tribunal had the right to order compensation for the over exploitation of water and the pollution caused by dumping the sludge in the village by the Coca Cola company which was closed in 2004. “The LDF government which came to power as a ‘common man’s government’ has the responsibility to address the issue of compensation by considering all the legal technicalities associated with the Bill. I hope it will once again pass the Bill in the Assembly and send it to the President again,” he noted. He said that the government should be for the poor villages of Plachimada whose lives were ruined by the Coca Cola factory.
